Šilalė Vladas Statkevičius Museum

The Šilalė Region Museum began to take shape in 1962, when the Šilalė branch of the Lithuanian Regional History Society was established.

Vytautas Didysis, atvykęs antrą kartą į Žemaitiją jos krikštyti, liepė Kaltinėnuose pastatyti vieną pirmųjų bažnyčių šiame regione (viena iš septynių Vytauto Didžiojo pastatytų Žemaitijoje). Vėliau žemaičių vyskupui Motiejui užrašė 10 Kaltinėnų gyventojų kartu su jų žeme ir pavedė juos valdyti miestelio klebonui. Nuo to laiko parapija apie 400 metų buvo tiesiogiai pavaldi vyskupui. Kaltinėnų Šv. Jono Krikštytojo parapija yra įsteigta 1416 m. Per šią ilgą, 600 metų parapijos gyvavimo laikotarpį, Kaltinėnuose stovėjo 5 bažnyčios, statytos 1416; 1613; 1732; 1826; 1886; Visos ankstesniosios, pagal istorinius duomenis, sudegė. Paskutinė bažnyčia Kaltinėnuose sudegė 1988 metais. Dabartinė bažnyčia yra šešta, atstatyta 1995 metais. Bažnyčioje išskirtiniai akcentai: įspūdingo dydžio Kristaus statula (autorius Alfonsas Vaura). Virš Kristaus statulos didingas vitražas (autorius Vytautas Švarlys, 2013 m.). Nuostabaus grožio Kryžiaus kelio paveikslai – vitražai bažnyčios salėje (autorius Vytautas Švarlys). Bažnyčioje originalios Kryžiaus kelio stotys, skamba skaitmeniniai vargonai.

Kaltinėnai Church of St. John the Baptist

D. Poška's Baublių Museum

The museum was established by writer and historian Dionizas Poška (1765–1830) inside the trunk of a millennium-old oak.

History

History of Šialė

Šilalė developed around a manor. From the early 16th century for about 200 years, it was owned by the Orvydai family. In 1533, the manor owner and Rietavas bailiff Vaitiekus Orvydas received a privilege from Sigismund I the Old to hold markets and build a church. This granted the right to establish a town. The name Šilalė comes from the large pine forests that once existed in the area, which were called "šilai" in Samogitian.
