It is believed that the first wooden chapel in Žygaičiai was built in 1608, followed by the construction of a church in 1785. After the original place of worship was destroyed by fire in the mid-19th century, the current masonry church was built in 1861.
During World War II, the church suffered significant damage but was rebuilt between 1955 and 1959 under the guidance of the parish priest, who later became the Bishop of Žemaitija, Antanas Vaičius (1926–2008).
The church features Neo-Romanesque and historical architectural elements. Inside, there are three altars from the 19th century. The main altar includes a unique tabernacle, decorated with Rococo-style carvings, created in the late 17th to early 18th century. Above the tabernacle is a 19th-century painting titled "The Farewell of St. Peter and St. Paul."
