Veliuona Manor and Park

Veliuonos Dvaras

Veliuona Manor, an integral part of the town and a direct descendant of the defensive castle complex, maintained its service character until the end of the 18th century. This is in contrast to the residential castle ensembles in the Panemunė region, such as those in Kaunas Raudondvaris, Raudonė, and Panemunė, where representative parks were often created.

The manor house was built by the Zaleski family between 1818 and 1820. It is a single-story building with classicist features, including a mezzanine (salka) in the center, and is flanked by a tall portico with four Doric columns, crowned by a triangular pediment.

In front of the manor, there is an oval-shaped park featuring a variety of tree species. The park is particularly renowned for its tulip trees.

As with many grand ducal estates, the administrators of Veliuona Manor frequently changed at the discretion of the Grand Duke. Among the many administrators over the centuries was the famous Barbora Radvilaitė, to whom Sigismund Augustus, among other gifts, also bequeathed Veliuona. Unfortunately, no gift could save the beautiful queen from a severe illness that took her young life. The current owner of the manor is Olga Vakselytė-Švartz.

Today, curious tourists visit the Veliuona Manor park to admire the blooming tulip trees, the manor's architecture, or to attend local town celebrations held there.
