The port in Smalininkai operated from the late 19th century, and ships would even be left there to overwinter. It is no coincidence that a water level measurement station was established in Smalininkai in 1811. The stone "steps," built in 1886, were used to measure the water level. In 1926, a water level observation tower with a "well" for recording the water level was constructed. This river water level measurement station is one of the oldest in Europe. The complex of port structures in Smalininkai, which includes the water measurement station, port, and embankment, has been granted national significance.
