Also known as Kepaluškalnis, the Pilės Hillfort is situated on a massive upland promontory with steep slopes reaching up to 20 meters. The site features a platform approximately 45 by 50 meters in size, which was once encircled by a flattened defensive rampart. In addition to these fortifications, there are two more ramparts and three defensive ditches preserved around the edge of the platform.
The size of the hillfort and the scale of its defensive structures suggest that during the conflicts with the Teutonic Knights, this site was one of the strongest fortresses in Žemaitija and served as the defensive and administrative center of the Kaltinėnai region.
