This is the largest and most prominent of the hillforts located in the Rambynas Regional Park, with steep slopes reaching up to 20 meters in height. It is situated very close to the town of Vilkyškiai and is easily visible and accessible from the Vilkyškiai-Šereiklaukis road. Nearby are two ancient settlements where the Skalvians lived from the 1st to the end of the 13th century, until the area was conquered by the Teutonic Knights. The castle was built on a promontory surrounded by the Apsta stream. On the eastern side of the hillfort, a cultural layer of 1.3–1.5 meters was discovered. It is believed that these settlements laid the foundation for the formation of the town of Vilkyškiai.
