Monument to the Tauragė Convention

After driving 6 km from Tauragė towards Tilžė (Sovetsk), in the village of Požerūnai, turning onto an old road to the southeast, we reach the Ežeruona River. Next to the collapsed bridge over the river stands a concrete monument commemorating the 1812 agreement between two generals. On December 30, 1812, near Tauragė, at the Požerūnai mill, a convention was signed between Lieutenant General H. York, commander of a Prussian army corps, and Major General I. Dibich, of the Russian army. This convention, known as the Tauragė Convention, brought fame to Tauragė in Europe. To mark the 100th anniversary of the signing of the convention in 1912, a granite monument was erected. In the autumn of 1944, Soviet soldiers blew up the monument. From 1976 to 1977, another concrete monument was built in the village of Požerūnai on the bank of the Ežeruona River, near the location where the witness to the historic event, the Požerūnai mill, stood.
