To commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Lithuania's Grand Duke Vytautas, a monument was erected in the center of Veliuona in 1930 (by sculptor Apolinaras Šimkūnas). During the Soviet occupation, there were plans to demolish the monument, but thanks to the resistance of the people of Veliuona, it has survived to this day.
