The prisoner-of-war camp "Oflager-53" operated from 1941 to 1942 and was one of the most brutal camps in the Klaipėda region. At various times, around 24,000 people were held here under outdoor conditions. The exact number of prisoners who were held and died in this camp is not known, but it is believed that around 10,000 may have perished.
Although none of the buildings from the former Pagėgiai prisoner-of-war camp have survived, the site of the former camp was included in the Lithuanian Register of Cultural Properties on July 1, 1993. On May 8, 2005, a black granite monolith with a gravure by Stasys Krasauskas titled "Eternally Alive," dedicated to the victims of fascism from 1941 to 1945, was unveiled. The monument was unveiled by the then Prime Minister, Algirdas Brazauskas.
