Matiškiai Mound is located in the Tauragė district, in the Mažonai eldership, to the south of Matiškiai village, on the right bank of the Jūra River. The mound's platform extends triangularly in a north-south direction, measuring 20 meters in length and 14 meters in width at the northern end. To the north of the mound lies a settlement area covering 1.2 hectares. At this mound site, there once stood a wooden castle until the 15th century, which was last fortified by the Samogitian chieftain Mažonas between 1311 and 1314. Surviving accounts of the mound suggest that there used to be a pit at the top of the castle, where a fire called "living fire" would burn.
