Near the Jurbarkas–Kaunas road stands the high Kartupėnai Hillfort. Some historians link this hillfort to Bisenė Castle. Bisenė Castle is known as the first Lithuanian castle to face the aggression of the Teutonic Order. P. Dusburgensis, a Prussian chronicler who documented the Crusades, mentions that in 1283, the master of the Prussian Order, Gerhard von Quert, crossed the Nemunas River on ice and attacked the Lithuanian castle. Some of the defenders were taken captive, others were killed, and the castle was burned during a change of guards on April 4, 1316.
