History of Raudonė Castle
Informational Video
In the 16th and 17th centuries, as the Nemunas River became a major trade route, castles acquired a new purpose—merchants and nobility began building castle-like residences where only decorative elements such as shooting openings remained from their original defensive functions. At the end of the 16th century, a Prussian nobleman, Kristupas Kiršenšteinas, built a Renaissance-style residence on this site, which reached its golden age under the rule of the builder's grandson, Jeronimas Kristupas Kiršenšteinas, the Treasurer and Secretary of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. For a long time, the castle belonged to the famous Platono Zubov family. The last owner of the castle was the Portuguese Ferio de Castro. The castle was severely damaged during World War II when the tower was blown up by retreating Germans. After the war, the residence was restored. The 33.5-meter-high castle tower was rebuilt, offering tourists unique views of the Raudonė area.
