Veliuona II Hill Fort, also known as Pilaitės

Veliuonos II piliakalnis, vad. Pilaitės

On the right bank of the Nemunas River, at the confluence of the Nemunas and Gystaus rivers, two mounds known as Pilaitės have survived. These mounds were the site of the Teutonic Order’s Bajerburg Castle.

Historical sources mention that Bajerburg was intended to become the capital of the conquered Lithuanian lands. Archaeological finds—900 arrowheads, stone projectiles, combat axes, and hatchets—confirm that the castle housed a massive arsenal of weapons used in assaults on surrounding Lithuanian castles, particularly against the well-fortified and strongly defended Veliuona Castle across the river. The Order’s plans were thwarted, as the castle was captured and burned within a year.
