Veliuonos piliakalniai

The historical monument—an archaeological complex of hillforts—is located on the Nemunas River valley slope in the town of Veliuona. The western hillfort is called Mount of Peace. It is a 32-meter-high steep-sided, truncated cone-shaped hillfort. This hillfort was the site of the Junigeda Castle from the late 13th to the late 15th century, with a fortified settlement nearby.

The second hillfort is known as Gedimino's Tomb Hill. On this hillfort stands a monument erected in 1925 to commemorate Grand Duke Gediminas of Lithuania. Some historians suggest that Gediminas died while attacking Bajerburg. According to legend, Gediminas was buried in Veliuona. In his honor, the local people constructed a mound, which is why the hillfort is named Gedimino's Tomb Hill.
