

A Lithuanian poet, essayist, translator, and diplomat who lived in Paantvardys, Jurbarkas District.
He was one of the most prominent Russian and Lithuanian symbolists, writing in both Lithuanian and Russian. His poetry in Russian (about 300 poems) is characterized by philosophical reflections on eternal truths of existence and the meaning of life, elegiac calmness, abstract symbolic images, and classical form. His works in Lithuanian blend themes of Lithuania's survival, philosophical reflection, and allegory with depictions of rural life and nature. His creativity had a significant impact on Lithuanian poets.
