The name of the locality is derived from the goddess Veliona, and her statue was erected in the town in 2010 to commemorate her. The unique sculpture was created by artist Erikas Daugulis. Veliona appears as if arriving in a boat that connects the present with the past, life with the afterlife, and hovers above the earth. Pagans believed that the spirits living in the underworld and their goddess Veliona influenced the fertility of the land and the fertility of livestock. The trees in her boat symbolize life, while the roots piercing through represent the idea that everything has another form of life.
